Marine security op starts on Monday

Indian-Coast-Guard

April 24 2013

Later this month, Indian security forces will conduct an important maritime security operational drill. Operation Sagar Kavach is helf several times a year to ensure the port security of Mumbai.

That security was called into question after the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks. The perpetrators of this terror gained illegal access to the city through the ports of the south sea.

In an effort to prevent such lapses in the future, decoy officers dressed in civilian clothing will attempt to infiltrate Mumbai through the ports. The policemen will be carrying arms and ammunition, and will make their attempts on either April 29th or 30th.

This is an excellent litmus test for Mumbai’s port security– surely if there is a breach that port-agents fail to prevent, authorities will surely initiate a full-scale look at the weakness in this essential line of defense.

Mumbai police commissioner and his top aids recently met to go over the final details of the operation. The operation will incorporate cooperation from the maritime security forces, the Navy and the Mumbai police.
